Rail Scheme Proposed to Link Derby Directly to Birmingham Airport

A major rail improvement scheme that would open up direct rail access from Derby to Birmingham Airport has been submitted to Government.

The Birmingham Airport Connectivity rail improvement scheme would open up hourly direct connections to Birmingham International for people living in and near to Derby, Sheffield, Doncaster, York, Darlington, Durham, and Newcastle.

It is hoped the proposals will benefits workers, residents, and travellers in these areas.

Birmingham Airport is the third largest airport in the UK outside of London, and it flies directly to over 150 destinations worldwide.

The proposed scheme, developed by Midlands Connect, is expected to service 2.2 million people as well as boosting local commuter links.

It will also open up direct rail access to Coventry station.

If approved, the construction work on the scheme can begin as early as 2024 and is estimated to cost between £125m to £180m.
